The extraordinary dryness is responsible for great archeological treasures, such as the famous Atacama mummies, which predate the Egyptian varieties by several thousand years. All sorts of artifacts are easily preserved, and new finds occur regularly. The Museo Arqueológico Gustavo Le Paige in San Pedro de Atacama, founded by a Belgian Jesuit, Gustavo Le Paige, has 380,000 objects while a 2,800-year-old site called Tulor has been unearthed nearby. Water is obviously a major logistical problem, not only for personal use but also to satisfy the enormous demands of modern mining. Huge investments have been made in pipelines to bring Andean waters to the coast or to mining outposts. At the Conchi bridge north of Chiu Chiu (near San Pedro), six pipelines come together. The first known industrial use of solar energy in the world was in a water desalinization plant built in 1872 at Carmen Alto near Antofagasta.
